Job Training Culinary Assistant Temp

SCHEDULE: 40 hours, Monday-Friday, 7:30am - 4pm

Pays $21.00 per hour

JOB DESCRIPTION:

SUMMARY OF THE POSITION:

This position supports the goal of the Workforce Development Department to prepare trainees for employment and a future career in the culinary industry. Trainees enroll in a six-month, paid, job training program which directly supports the Pine Street Inn’s mission to end homelessness. The Culinary Assistant will be responsible for assisting the Job Training Program Instructor in overseeing the training kitchen. This includes the organization and overview of prep work including retrieving food from a production kitchen, observing and supporting trainees, and assuring all prep work is completed to FS standards. This individual will work with Job Training Program Instructor to prepare for new incoming cohorts of trainees (apprx.16 individuals every 8 weeks). This includes administrative work including, but not limited to, classroom materials, calendar planning, and preparation. In the absence of the Program Instructor, the Culinary Assistant may be responsible for directing trainees to ensure that production and training goals are achieved.

  • Promote ServSafe guidelines and kitchen safety standards
  • Assist in coordination of partners including Visiting Chef Series

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

Required:

  • Ability to read, write and understand English satisfactorily
  • Culinary experience of 2 + years

Preferred:

  • Bachelor’s Degree
  • Culinary experience of 2 + years
  • Experience working with vulnerable populations 2+ years
  • Fluency in Spanish
  • Registered Dietitian or Nutrition Experience
  • Work effectively with diverse constituencies in a stressful environment
  • Knowledge and experience in menu and food production planning, nutrition and special diets

PHYSICAL ABILITIES:

REQUIRED:

  • Ability to stand for long periods of time
  • Ability to lift at least fifty pounds of weight, bend, stoop, and access walk-ins (refrigerators and freezers) for extended periods of time
  • Ability to climb stairs
  • Ability to push/pull/stoop
  • Ability to use both hands/arms to chop

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This individual spends most of their time in the FS operations working directly with the Job Training Program Instructor in the training kitchen as well as the classroom setting.

REQUIRED:

  • Ability to stand on their feet for extended periods of time while assisting in food preparation
  • Experience using Windows Office365 programs

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

CULINARY TRAINING ASSISTANT FUNCTIONS:

  • Will be expected to assist in cleaning kitchen equipment (e.g., ovens, stoves and grills, deep-frying machine and any other areas as directed).
  • Must help create and foster a sense of teamwork amongst all FS employees. Must also contribute to a safe, friendly, and cooperative work environment. Adheres to the time and attendance policies and practices of the department
  • Must provide an enthusiastic work environment for trainees by positive reinforcement and encouragement
  • Adheres to all FS and PSI policies and procedures.
  • Other related duties as required/directed
  • Reports to Job Training Program Instructor at the beginning and end of each shift to ensure that daily assignments are issued and completed.
  • Ensure completion of daily kitchen audit, while adhering to all policies and practices of the FS department and PSI These include but are not limited to SOPs established by OSHA, the Dept. of Public Health (State and Federal guidelines) and SafeServe Sanitation.
  • Work with the Job Training Program Instructor, students and volunteers to ensure that all meals are prepared according to the quality standards and practices of the FS department. May be required to outline and explain instructions from daily tasks to these individuals.
  • In the absence of the Job Training Program Instructor, the assistant is responsible for guiding, trainees, and volunteers; ensuring that production goals are achieved.
  • Communicates any shortages or discrepancies in the daily production inventory (and requisition) to the supervisor.
  • Provide in-the-moment feedback/assistance to trainees based on performance/skill in training kitchen as well as feedback at week 2 & 7 evaluations
  • Representation of PSI mission, vision, and values including: Teamwork, Respect, Accountability, Community
  • Create culinary education materials for trainees including worksheets, handouts, and quizzes
  • Perform administrative duties such as scanning, filing, and uploading documents
  • Present course material front of trainees and answer questions appropriately
  • Set up/break down of kitchen and classroom for daily activities and culinary prep work
  • Participation in educational field trips
  • Assist in outreach, reminders, and planning for Visiting Chefs, set up kitchen accordingly
  • Prepare, print, and document all recipe’s prepared in training kitchen
